| Allison Mack (Chloe Sullivan) and Annette O'Tool (Martha Kent) talk about Clark and Lana in the Smallville: The Official Companion Season 4 that released this month!
MACK:quote: "For most of the fourth season, the show took a break from the relationship angst that often plagued both Lana and Clark. As things progressed, however, Clark and Lana grew closer again. Many fans wanted to see this happen, but Allison Mack felt that the characters should have been a bit more honest with one another before proceeding. "There’s no honesty in their relationship, and there’s no way that they could have a healthy relationship without that honesty. I know the 'Clana' fans are going to hate me for saying that, bit it's--it's realistic. It's not a healthy relationship. You can’t be with someone if your not honest with them."
Kristin Kreuk, in her Smallville magazine interview, agreed. "In any relationship , the most important thing is that you have to be honest and truthful and share things with the person that you're partners with." Kristin said. "If Clark can't do that...well, Lana's not stupid."
O'TOOLE:quote: "Being an invincible hero from another planet makes it a tough notion for Clark to even have a relationship. "Everybody Clark loves is going to die; he's going to outlive everybody," Annette O'toole reflected, contemplating the burden her screen son has to endure. "Martha thinks about stuff like that all the time. He's doomed to be lonely, so she wants him to grab whatever love he can.
"When I go online," O'toole continued, "and I read about this whole Clark and Lana thing, and how people don't understand why Martha's advocating for Lana or whatever, it's not about Lana; it's [about] love. Martha wants Clark to love and be loved when he can be. And he genuinely, whatever viewers feel about it, loves her. And of course that's first love. That's your innocent first love. But at the time. there were moments where Martha thought this might be his only chance.""
Big thanks to Lana in love for the write-ups!
